Investigators with the Elbert County Sheriff's Office are responsible
for a large array of responsibilities relating to the investigation of
crimes occurring in Elbert County. The Investigative Division has four
investigators: Major David Cleveland who has over 23 years of experience,
Capt. Chris Cornell who has 20 years of experience, Lt. Wade King who
has 19 years of experience and Lt. Tammy Gilliard who has 18 years of
experience. Cases are assigned to investigators each morning and while
an individual investigator may be assigned to a particular case based
on his or her expertise the entire team works as one to ensure that the
case gets the attention and results that it deserves. Regardless if the
incident is a misdemeanor, theft or a homicide, the Elbert County Sheriff's
Office Investigative Division is a full function unit. The Investigative
Division is able to complete all aspects of a case from DNA collection
and Forensic gathering of evidence to arson investigation and advanced
interviewing techniques. Narcotic Investigating is also handled by the
Investigative Division of the Sheriff's Office where a great deal of time
is devoted in apprehending the drug dealers and removing their poison
from the streets. Each year large amounts of property, currency and drugs
are seized by the Investigative Division.

| Major David Cleveland Started career
with the Elberton Police Department and currently supervises the Criminal
Investigation Division with the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office. Most all
of his career has been devoted to the field of Criminal Investigation. He
currently is a certified Georgia Identification Technician, Arson Investigator
as well as completing many other courses related to criminal investigation
and death investigation. He also oversees the Sheriff’s Office training
program where he is POST certified General Instructor, Firearm Instructor,
Tactical Operations Instructor, and Taser Instructor. |
| Capt Chris Cornell has been employed
with the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office throughout his career. For a several
years he was assigned to work with a drug task force out of Athens which
the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office was a member. Capt. Cornell, while he
handles many criminal investigative matters his expertise lies in the area
of narcotic investigation. He oversees working the localized drug problem
as well as works with many other federal, state, and county drug units where
he focuses on covert high level operations. |
| Lt. Wade King started his career with
the Athens Clark County Sheriff’s Office where he worked his way up through
the ranks until he joined the investigative division of the Elbert County
Sheriff’s Office. Lt. King handles many general criminal investigative matters
and is best known for his interview skills. |
| Lt. Tammy Gilliard started her career
with the Elberton Police Department, worked a brief time with the Monroe
Police Department before joining the Elbert County Sheriff’s Office. She
handles a broad-spectrum of criminal investigative matters but her expertise
lies in the area child abuse, neglect and molestation investigation. She
is a certified forensic interviewer and oversees the sex offender registration.
