The Elbert County Sheriff's Office
has 5 full time traffic enforcement officers. Major Shayne Bennett, Sgt.
Blake Young, Cpl. Carey Fewox, Cpl. Marc Fleming, DFC Carissa Robins work
in this division whose primary function is to investigate traffic accidents,
look for and arrest impaired drivers, and provide selective traffic enforcement
duties to all areas of the county. Traffic enforcement deputies work closely
with the Governor Office of Highway Safety in the enforcement of traffic
laws. Each one of the traffic enforcement deputies have attended many
advanced schools in the investigation of traffic accidents and the enforcement
of traffic laws.
In 2005, the Elbert County Sheriff's Office created
the STEALTH (Sheriff's Tactical Enforcement and Apprehension to save Lives
on The Highways) Unit to battle drunk drunk and aggressive drivers. This
Unit is also responsible for child safety seat checks, education of the
traffic laws, DUI checkpoints, enforcing speed limits, accident investigations
and suspended license and insurance violations.
The Traffic Unit has received numerous local, state and national awards for highway safety on Georgia's roadways.
The traffic units are equipped with radar units, video camera systems, high output radio repeaters and in car computer system which is connected directly to state computer system for the purpose of running tag information and driver license information. Any one wishing to be assigned to the traffic unit must have worked with the sheriff's office for a period of one year.
